Wine Down Thursday: Sean and Abby from ¿Por qué no? Selections
May 14 from 6 to 7:30pm
Sampler: $20/peron

Spain is alive. Not in the postcard sense — in the cellar, in the vineyard, in the glass. This Thursday, we're thrilled to welcome Sean and Abby from ¿Por qué no? Selections — one of the most thoughtful and purposeful importers working in Spain today. For years, they've done the hard, unglamorous work of finding the right producers: the ones farming with conscience, making wine at a human scale, answering to their land before anyone else. These are not wines chasing scores or trends. ¿Por qué no? exists because someone had to ask the question — why not the small grower, why not the forgotten grape, why not the wine that has no marketing budget but all the soul in the world? — and then go find the answer, bottle by bottle.

We pour four bottles that tell four very different stories. We open with Albillo Real, a nearly forgotten white grape making a quiet and compelling comeback — rare, textured, and worth seeking out. Next, we travel to the Salnés Valley, home to one of Galicia's most celebrated expressions of Albariño — saline, precise, and electric. From there, the high granitic terraces of Ribeira Sacra, where Mencía grown on near-vertical slopes delivers a wine of startling perfume and silky tension. And we close in Rioja, not with Tempranillo, but with the indigenous Maturana Tinta — a variety so scarce and singular it deserves to be sought out.
These are wines made without shortcuts, from places that still believe terroir is worth protecting.
Please join us in raising a glass to the wines of Spain — and to the people who bring them here. Welcome, Sean and Abby.
